Beer loss happens. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of how much—and more importantly, why. Whether it’s trub left behind in a fermenter, foam out the top of the bright, or that mysterious “where the hell did that 3 BBL go?” during packaging, beer loss is simply part of the game.
Here's a quick rundown on how to calculate your brewery’s beer loss, why it's important, and how you could be tracking exactly where your beer is going.
Beer loss can occur at several points during production, and it's essential to identify which areas contribute most to inefficiencies. Loss typically comes from the following sources:
Okay before we move into how to fix beer loss, it’s important to know how to actually calculate how much beer is being lost. Beer loss is calculated as a percentage of the beer brewed vs. what is packaged or sold. The formula is simple but effective:
Beer Loss (%) = [(Volume Brewed - Volume Packaged/Sold) / Volume Brewed] × 100
However, calculating how much beer is lost is only half the battle. Understanding where and why those losses happen is where you’ll find the most value. A 10% loss can be a baseline, but once you dive into the details, you’ll uncover areas for improvement, from optimizing transfer procedures to improving packaging workflows. And with every ounce of lost beer you avoid, that is money your brewery saves immediately, without any additional expense.
We know how to calculate loss, but how do we really dig in and see where that loss is happening? With nine different interactive reports, the Beer30 Command Center is a game changer. The interactive reports make the Command Center the most advanced insight tool of any brewery software on the market today.
Using the Command Center’s Beer Loss report, you can easily dive deep into each loss event and gain actionable insights. Pair the Beer Loss Report with our Batch Efficiency and Brew Length report and you’ve got a 360 view of everything going on with your beer and where losses are occurring.
Beer30 tracks and categorizes losses based on specific events, including:
These events capture critical loss data that helps you pinpoint exactly where beer is lost, whether it’s from quality issues, overfills, or other operational inefficiencies.
Using Liquid COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) and UoM (Unit of Measure) for each brand and batch, Beer30 automatically calculates the estimated dollar loss for every batch. This enables you to quickly assess the financial impact of losses and make data-driven decisions about where to focus your improvement efforts.
Packaging is one of the largest sources of beer loss in many breweries. Beer30 calculates packaging efficiency by comparing totalizer data ( using flow meters to record total volume sent to the packaging line) against the actual beer packaged. This gives you a clear picture of how much beer is lost during the packaging process, whether it’s due to spills, foam, or overfills, and allows you to optimize this stage of production for better yield.
Data-Driven Decisions: The better you know where your losses occur, the more you’ll be able to make targeted improvements. Whether it's adjusting your fermentation practices or refining your packaging process, the ability to track losses down to the batch and brand level will allow you to make informed, actionable decisions.
Set Loss Targets: By understanding where and how much beer you’re losing, you can set specific targets for reduction. With Beer30, you can compare your loss data against established industry benchmarks and create realistic goals for waste reduction.
Improve Margins: Beer loss doesn’t just affect the quantity of beer—it affects the profitability of each batch. It means more beer for the same amount of work and raw materials. Reducing loss at any stage increases your margins, and directly helps your bottom line.
The Beer30 Command Center and reports give you real-time insights into your brewery’s efficiency, with an easy-to-navigate dashboard that tracks beer loss, packaging efficiency, and more.
By tracking beer loss across each production phase, from fermentation to packaging, you can uncover inefficiencies, reduce waste, and improve profitability. With Beer30 and the new Command Center you’ll have the tools you need to understand your beer loss on a deeper level, track it in real-time, and optimize your brewing and packaging processes for better results.

At Beer30, we’re all about helping breweries utilize our brewery software to streamline their operations, make data-driven decisions, and focus on what they do best—brewing incredible beer. That’s why we were thrilled to have our VP of Sales and Marketing, Aaron Gore, featured on Branding for Breweries Podcast to discuss the future of brewing and how technology is shaping the industry.
On the podcast, Aaron sat down with Tim “The Brand Weaver” to talk about the evolving craft beer landscape and how breweries can stay ahead of the curve. From the increasing demand for efficiency in production to the power of real-time data, the discussion covered key insights that every brewery—big or small—should be thinking about.
Lessons from past brewery successes – What history teaches us about long-term growth.
The state of the industry today – Key challenges that breweries are facing.
What’s next for brewing? – Is the industry headed for a boom or a bust?
How breweries can position themselves for success – Actionable strategies for sustainable growth.
Aaron kicked things off by looking back. What’s the secret sauce of breweries that stick around?
Spoiler: there’s no magic bullet.
It’s about nailing the basics of management—cash flow, debt management, and treating your brewery like a business, not just a passion project. Successful breweries know how to make the shift from homebrewer to business owner. They’ll need to master finance, marketing, and hospitality. Good beer is great, but it’s only the entry fee. Great business management is necessary to succeed in today’s market.
Today’s craft beer world is…well, challenging. Declining growth, crowded markets, and rising costs. It’s not the boom of the mid-2000s anymore.
Aaron’s take? Don’t try to wait it out. The breweries thriving now are investing in their future, not just brewing more beer. Prioritize staying alive (lights on, doors open…minor things like that), then focus on what sets you apart. Your taproom’s local dominance or a killer brand story can cut through the noise. Tools like Beer30’s brewery management software can help—streamlining ops so you can focus on strategy, not the chaos of spreadsheets.
Peering into his crystal ball (shiny and bald, naturally), Aaron sees craft beer leveling off after its explosive growth along the adoption curve over the past two decades. The early adopters—beer geeks like us—are hooked, but the future lies with casual drinkers. That means simpler stories, sharper branding, and consistency that keeps them coming back.
Small breweries can stay nimble and dominate their local scene but scaling up takes a more carefully crafted approach. Either way, adaptation is key—forecasting, cost management, and inventory tools like what you get with good brewery software like Beer30 can keep your cash flow steady as you pivot.
Aaron highlighted two underused tricks:
Aaron’s journey—from professional wrestling rings (Yes, really) to brewery consulting—taught him one thing: you can’t do it alone and you certainly can’t be careless with your effort.
That’s where Beer30 comes in. We’re not just brewery software; we help make your beer consistent and make sure you profit. Whether it’s managing COGS, optimizing production, or scaling distribution, Beer30 gives you the clarity to whole-ass your business (no half-assing here!).
Listen to Aaron Gore on The Brand Weaver podcast.
At Beer30, we’re committed to supporting breweries with tools that make operations smoother and decision-making smarter. If you’re ready to take your brewing game to the next level and embrace the future of brewing, let’s talk!
Running a successful taproom isn’t just about brewing great beer…well, that’s a big part of it, but it’s more than just beer. You need to create an experience that keeps customers coming back. Having and keeping quality staff is hugely important, and training them to not just do their job but to do it in a way that’s going to help increase sales can make or break a brewery’s success. No one likes a pushy bartender, but making genuine recommendations and providing top-notch service naturally encourages more sales.
Here are 10 simple but effective strategies to boost revenue while keeping customers happy.
Beers to-go can be a great way to increase your sales. It’s easy for customers to forget they can take beer home with them. Before closing out a tab, train staff to ask, "Would you like to grab a 4-pack of that IPA to take home?" This simple prompt can work wonders, with some studies showing that it can raise the rate customers buy packaged beer by as much as 90%!
If a guest is raving about a particular beer, mentioning that they can take some home to enjoy later could lead to an easy additional sale.
Instead of having customers crowd the bar for every round, consider staffing 1-2 team members to provide table service. It keeps customers seated, ordering more, and enjoying their experience.
When the taproom is packed on a weekend night, having a server check on tables means guests don’t have to fight for a bartender’s attention—leading to higher sales and better customer satisfaction.
A clean taproom is an inviting taproom. Regularly bussing tables not only keeps things tidy but also gives staff an opportunity to chat with customers and offer refills.
If a guest’s glass is empty while you’re clearing the table, a quick “Another round?” makes it easy for them to say yes.
People love to feel like regulars, even on their first visit. A simple introduction makes a lasting impression.
Greeting guests with a warm, "Hey, I’m so and so, what’s your name?" creates a friendly atmosphere and makes them feel like part of the family. This helps turn them from simply customers, into regulars or even evangelists for your brand.
Customers love a good story—especially when it’s about what’s in their glass. Little tidbits that may seem boring to you could make your customer’s day. If your staff can share insights about the brewing process or fun facts about a beer, it makes the experience more memorable.
If a seasonal release was inspired by a local ingredient or a funny mishap in the brewhouse, sharing that story makes the beer more special and more likely to be ordered again.
No one wants to pull out their card every time they order a drink. Starting a tab encourages guests to stay longer and order more.
If a customer is on their second beer, suggesting, “Want me to start a tab for you?” makes it more convenient for them to keep ordering without interruptions.
A little generosity goes a long way. If someone’s on the fence about a beer, offering a small taste can lead to a full pour—and maybe even a to-go purchase.
When a guest is stuck between two options, giving them a quick sample helps them decide and builds trust in your recommendations.
Flights are another option for letting customers discover their new favorite beer, one small pour at a time. And they are often willing to pay more per ounce for those smaller pours, which helps keep your margins healthy.
Repeat customers are the backbone of any taproom. The majority of business at a brewery is going to come from loyal customers. A loyalty program is a great way to incentivize guests and keep them coming.
Inviting guests to join a loyalty program with exclusive perks gives them another reason to keep choosing your taproom over others. Loyalty apps also give you the ability to understand what your most important customers actually want and enjoy, letting you build your business around them with confidence.
Even if you don’t have a full kitchen, suggesting a snack that pairs well with a customer’s beer keeps them in their seat longer and increases check averages.
If you don’t have a kitchen, partnering with a food truck can be a great way to support your community and increase ticket sales.
Implementing the right software can streamline your operations and make your brewery more efficient.
Plus Beer30 now integrates with GoTab which means faster inventory management, fewer errors, and time saved each week!
If you implement these strategies and leverage the right software, your taproom can create a welcoming, engaging, and profitable environment.
Remember, the best sales don’t come from pushy tactics—they come from creating great experiences.

As we dive into 2025, the landscape of craft brewing continues to develop. Let's take a look at the trends that could boost your bottom line and keep your brewery ahead of the competition.
There’s a lot that’s changed since we wrote about this last year, and some things that have only become more prevalent. Here's your insider's guide to what's working, what's profitable, and what could transform your brewing operation this year.
Smart brewers are discovering that sustainability isn't just good for the planet – it's excellent for profitability. Here's what's driving ROI:
The key to success with sustainability initiatives is prioritizing projects with the fastest payback periods. Start with energy and water conservation measures, which typically show returns within 18-24 months, then reinvest those savings into longer-term sustainability projects like solar installations or advanced recycling systems.
Pro tip: Many states and provinces now offer tax incentives for sustainable brewing practices. Now is the time to get some green on those green investments!
Don't dismiss the alcohol-free trend – we know that brewing NA beer comes with its challenges, but it also brings with it new opportunities. With more customers than ever exploring non-alcoholic options as a complement to their lifestyle, it provides a way to connect with those drinkers even as their habits change with time.
Check out this blog post we wrote all about NA beer for a more in-depth look at the non-alcoholic route.
Hyperlocal Sourcing: Building Community and Cutting Costs
Local sourcing isn't just trendy – it's a smart business move. Brewers are seeing benefits like:
The real power of hyperlocal sourcing lies in its marketing potential. When you partner with local farmers and suppliers, you're not just buying ingredients – you're buying into a story that resonates with customers and justifies premium pricing. Consider starting with one signature "100% local" brew to test the waters. And with greater traceability and control over your raw materials, you can have greater insight than ever before into exactly what your beer costs, and how to run your business as efficiently as possible.
You’re probably already integrating technology into your brewing practices, and for good reason! Investing in quality monitoring systems and brewery software like Beer30 allows you to track everything you need, from grain to glass, accurately and ensures you maximize your brewery's ROI.
Investment in brewing tech is a strong trend that will help you bolster your ROI. With Beer30 you’ll get:
The right brewery management system serves as the backbone of your brewery's operations, enabling you to make data-driven decisions and quickly adapt to changing market conditions. Choosing a system like Beer30, which offers customizable features, allows the software to grow with your business so you can start small and grow as your brewery grows.
Finding good employees can be a massive roadblock to any business. So, keeping the ones that help your business succeed is important. Smart brewery owners are seeing real returns on wellness investments:
Investment in employee wellness programs typically pays for itself through reduced turnover costs alone. The improved product consistency and quality that comes from retained, experienced staff adds significant additional value over time.
The math is simple: Happy, healthy brewers = consistent, quality beer = better profits.
Strategic partnerships help to open new revenue streams and get the word out about your brand from a trusted “word of mouth” source. Some benefits include:
International collaborations work best when approached as long-term strategic partnerships rather than one-off projects. Look for partners whose strengths complement your weaknesses, and vice versa, to create mutually beneficial relationships that can grow over time.
Key insight: Start with contract brewing agreements to test new markets before major expansion investments.
Direct-to-consumer sales are growing with things like beer subscription models. Breweries are building out e-commerce shipping infrastructure, creating membership clubs, and partnering with third-party companies to handle logistics and compliance. The results are showing impressive returns. Some of the benefits are:
The key to DTC's success is starting small and scaling based on demand and capability. Focus first on perfecting your local delivery system and online ordering process before expanding to broader distribution areas.
The Bottom Line
These trends aren't just about staying current – they're about staying profitable. Focus on the trends that align with your brewery's strengths and market position. Remember: not every trend needs to be adopted, but every trend needs to be understood.
As the brewing landscape becomes increasingly complex, having the right software partner is more crucial than ever. As a brewery owner, maintaining quality control is paramount. Consistent taste, aroma, and appearance are crucial for customer satisfaction and brand loyalty. With the complexities involved in brewing, breweries increasingly turn to Brewery ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software to enhance their quality control measures. This technology integrates various functions within a brewery, offering a comprehensive solution to manage operations efficiently. Here, we explore the significant impact of Brewery ERP software on quality control.
Brewery ERP software centralizes and automates many aspects of the brewing process, from raw material procurement to packaging. By integrating these processes, the software ensures that each step is monitored and controlled, reducing the chances of human error. Automated scheduling and production planning help maintain consistent brewing cycles, ensuring that each batch meets the desired quality standards. This level of control is essential for maintaining the unique characteristics of each brew.
It provides detailed tracking of ingredients and processes, enabling breweries to quickly trace any issues to their source. This capability is invaluable in ensuring compliance with industry regulations and standards. In the event of a quality concern, breweries can efficiently conduct recalls and investigations, minimizing the impact on their operations and reputation.
By continuously monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) and quality metrics, breweries can detect deviations from the norm and address them promptly. This proactive approach helps maintain consistent quality and optimize production processes. Real-time insights also enable breweries to make informed decisions, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness.
Effective inventory management is crucial for maintaining quality control. Brewery ERP software offers advanced inventory management capabilities, ensuring that ingredients are available at the right time and in the right quantities. By managing inventory levels efficiently, breweries can avoid stockouts and overstock situations, negatively impacting quality. Additionally, the software tracks ingredients' shelf life and storage conditions, ensuring that only high-quality materials are used in the brewing process.
Consistency is a hallmark of quality in brewing. The software helps standardize recipes and processes, ensuring each beer set meets the same standards. It reduces variability by providing detailed documentation and automation, ensuring that every brew is produced optimally. This standardization is essential for maintaining brand consistency and meeting customer expectations.
It facilitates better collaboration and communication across different departments within a brewery. This improved communication helps coordinate efforts, promptly address quality issues, and implement best practices across the organization. Enhanced collaboration ultimately leads to better quality control and operational efficiency.
